We've tried just about everything we can think of tried different mod pack versions and as he said he's completely replaced his game and nothing we try seems to help him get back into the game. We set him to the recommended mod pack and it uploaded the files. And now he has the newer direwolf20 splash page but it gets to where it says 'downloading terrain' and kicks back out to the launcher.

Now if you are quick enough you can walk away from them and break free however if your too late and your screen fully fades to darkness you will get a jumpscare and your character will die! IF you manage to escape the static slowly fades away but if you get jump scared right after escaping there will most likely be no way to survive!
